Product Description:

Amino acids infusion is a sterile intravenous solution of essential and non-essential amino acids. It is the protein part of parenteral nutrition, given when a patient cannot eat or absorb enough through the gut, while glucose and lipid infusions supply energy. This page covers 5%, 8.5%, 10% and 15% solutions, and concentration drives handling. Lower strengths may run through a peripheral vein in some regimens; stronger, hypertonic solutions need a central line, often compounded with glucose and lipid. Some contain electrolytes.

Amino acid solutions are used in intensive care, after major surgery, in intestinal failure and in malnourished patients who cannot be fed enterally. Special formulas exist for kidney and liver disease and for infants. The nutrition team sets dose and rate from weight and clinical state. Pharmacists monitor fluid balance, electrolytes, glucose, urea and liver tests, and watch for refeeding syndrome. They are contraindicated in inborn errors of amino acid metabolism and need care in severe renal or hepatic failure.

Sourcing notes. Specify concentration, amino acid profile and nitrogen content, electrolyte content, container (glass bottle or non-PVC bag with overpouch) and volume. Ask for a CoA per batch with sterility, bacterial endotoxins and particulate matter results, the GMP certificate for sterile manufacture and a CoPP. A CTD or ACTD dossier with stability for your climatic zone, including Zone IVb, is standard. Store at room temperature, protected from light, without freezing; no cold chain. Large-volume infusions are heavy, so plan freight and shelf life. Prescription, hospital use.
