Product Description:

Trace elements injection is a sterile concentrate of essential minerals for adding to parenteral nutrition (PN). Formulas supply zinc, copper, manganese and selenium, and broader ones add iron, iodide, fluoride, chromium and molybdenum. These are enzyme cofactors, and patients fed only by vein have no other source. The listed 5 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL strengths are per element and vary by formula, so check the full composition. It is never given undiluted.

Hospital pharmacies add it aseptically to PN bags for adults and children who cannot meet their needs through the gut, at a daily dose matched to age, weight and clinical state. Neonatal and adult formulas differ, so products are not interchangeable without checking each element. Copper and manganese clear through bile and can build up in cholestasis, while zinc and selenium need review in renal impairment. Manganese can deposit in the brain during long-term PN, so many teams check levels.
