How Companies in Egypt Can Source Pharma Products & CDMO Services (2026 Guide)

Introduction

Egypt is one of the largest pharmaceutical markets in the Middle East and Africa, with a big population, rising chronic-disease demand and a well-established local manufacturing industry. That industry makes a large share of the tablets, capsules and syrups sold locally, but it depends heavily on imported APIs, excipients and packaging, and the country still imports many biologics, oncology products and specialty medicines.

Two public bodies shape the market. The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) registers, prices and inspects medicines, and the Unified Procurement Authority (UPA) manages purchasing of medical products for public entities. Both were created under Law 151 of 2019.

This guide explains where supply for Egypt typically comes from, what buyers source, how to qualify suppliers, which documents you need and how to handle the common problems. For more market detail, see our Egypt country hub.

Where supply comes from

Egyptian buyers combine several supply bases. Local formulators mainly buy inputs, while importers and hospitals buy finished products that are not made locally.

Supply baseTypical strengths for Egyptian buyers
India and ChinaGeneric APIs, intermediates and excipients for local plants, plus finished generics
Europe (EU-GMP)Biologics, oncology, sterile injectables, specialty medicines, and reference-country products for registration
United StatesSpecialty and biologic products and sites with US FDA history
MENA region (Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE)Branded generics, Arabic artwork experience and short transit
South Korea and JapanBiosimilars and specialty APIs
Local Egyptian manufacturingMany solid orals, liquids and hospital products, often preferred in public procurement

Pick suppliers by site performance, not by origin. A good partner holds current GMP status, has a clean inspection record and can supply Zone IV stability data and EDA-ready documents. For APIs, also check the supplier's DMF quality and its record of change notifications, because a change of API source triggers a variation in Egypt.

Pharma categories supply

CategoryWhat buyers typically source
APIs and excipientsAntibiotics, statins, antidiabetics, PPIs, analgesics for local formulation
Finished genericsProducts not made locally, or bought to fill gaps in supply
Oncology and specialtyCytotoxic injectables, targeted therapies, hormone products
Biologics and biosimilarsInsulins, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines
Hospital injectablesAntibiotic vials, anaesthetics, lyophilised products, IV fluids
OTC and nutraceuticalsVitamins, supplements, herbal products

CDMO services in demand

  • Contract manufacturing of sterile and lyophilised products that local plants do not make
  • Technology transfer and licensing of generic dossiers to Egyptian manufacturers
  • Formulation development for products aimed at Egypt and wider African and Arab markets
  • Stability studies under Zone IV conditions
  • Bilingual Arabic and English packaging

If you mainly need inputs, our API sourcing service covers supplier comparison for local formulation.

How to source pharma products

1. Define the requirement

Set out the molecule, strength, dosage form, pack size, expected volume, price basis and target channel: private market, UPA tender or hospital. Note whether the product is registered with EDA, pending registration or unregistered.

2. Qualify the supplier

Ask for:

  • A current GMP certificate from the national authority, plus EU-GMP, US FDA, PIC/S or WHO prequalification evidence where available
  • A Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP)
  • Certificates of Analysis for recent commercial batches
  • Long-term stability data under Zone IV conditions
  • The API DMF and the latest audit report
  • Proof that the product is marketed in the country of origin or a reference country

Check each certificate with the authority that issued it. Our guide on how to verify a pharmaceutical supplier lists the checks and red flags.

3. Prepare the EDA file

EDA works with CTD-format dossiers. Confirm the supplier can provide the quality module, bioequivalence studies for generics, stability data, mock-ups and samples for testing.

4. Agree terms

Agree MOQ, lead time, Incoterms, currency and payment terms, and minimum shelf life on arrival. Sign a quality agreement covering change control and recalls.

5. Pilot, then scale

Place a smaller first order, test it locally and review the documents before you commit to larger volumes.

PharmaTradz works with GMP-certified manufacturers and CDMOs across Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa. Share your specification through a request for quotation to compare options.

Required documents for import

For registration with EDA

  • CTD dossier, including the quality module
  • GMP certificate and COPP
  • Bioequivalence and stability studies
  • Evidence of marketing in the country of origin or a reference country
  • Arabic and English mock-ups and patient leaflet
  • Pharmacovigilance documents
  • Samples and reference standards for EDA laboratory testing

For each shipment

  • EDA import approval and release for the consignment
  • Advance Cargo Information (ACI) registration on the Nafeza platform
  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Certificate of origin
  • Batch Certificate of Analysis
  • Bill of lading or air waybill
  • Temperature records for cold-chain products

Only importers listed on EDA's importers register can bring medicines in, so check your importer's status before shipping.

Logistics and shipping

Egypt sits between Europe, Asia and Africa, which gives it short routes from several supply bases.

  • Sea: Alexandria and Dekheila on the Mediterranean, Damietta, Port Said, and Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea.
  • Air: Cairo International Airport handles most pharmaceutical air cargo.
OriginAir freightSea freight
South and East AsiaTypically 2–5 daysTypically 2–5 weeks
EuropeTypically 1–4 daysTypically 1–2 weeks to Mediterranean ports
North AmericaTypically 3–6 daysTypically 3–5 weeks

Cold chain

Biologics, insulins and vaccines usually travel by air into Cairo in validated containers. Plan for summer heat on the road from port or airport to the warehouse, and use GDP-compliant forwarders with data loggers.

Incoterms and customs

CIF and CFR are common for sea freight, and CIP or FCA for air. Shipment details must be registered in the ACI system before loading, and the Egyptian Customs Authority releases medicines only after EDA approval. Missing ACI data is a frequent cause of delays.

Common challenges and practical solutions

ChallengePractical solution
Long registration timelinesStart with a gap analysis of the dossier and confirm the reference-country status early
Price ceilings under reference pricingModel the likely EDA price before agreeing supply prices with the manufacturer
Foreign-currency and payment timingAgree realistic payment terms and confirm letter-of-credit arrangements before production
Variations after an API changeLock the API source in the quality agreement and require advance notice of changes
Arabic mock-up rejectionsUse one approved Arabic text and have it proofed before printing
Shipments held for ACI errorsRegister ACI data before loading and match it to the invoice and packing list
Dependence on one API sourceQualify a second supplier and register it as an alternative where possible

Conclusion

Egypt combines a strong local industry with real import needs for APIs, biologics and specialty products. Buyers who choose suppliers by site quality, plan EDA registration and pricing early, and prepare well for UPA tenders will have fewer surprises.

PharmaTradz helps Egyptian buyers compare GMP-certified manufacturers and CDMOs across several regions, so each product can come from the source that suits it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who regulates medicines in Egypt?

The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), set up under Law 151 of 2019, handles registration, pricing and inspection.

How do public hospitals in Egypt buy medicines?

Through the Unified Procurement Authority (UPA), which has exclusive responsibility for public purchasing of medical products.

Does an imported medicine need prior approval elsewhere to register in Egypt?

Generally yes. It should be marketed in the country of origin or a reference country, typically for at least a year.

Is Arabic labelling required in Egypt?

Yes. EDA requires label information in Arabic and English, with the public price shown on the pack.

What stability data does EDA expect?

Long-term data under hot-climate Zone IV conditions. Confirm the exact conditions in EDA's current guideline.

Can unregistered medicines be imported into Egypt?

Only with EDA approval, usually where no registered equivalent exists or local supply is short.
