Vildagliptin is an antidiabetic medication. It works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreasing the hormones that raise blood sugar levels. This reduces the fasting and postmeal sugar levels.

Product Description:

Vildagliptin inhibits dipeptidyl peptidase-4, the enzyme that degrades the incretin hormones GLP-1 and GIP within minutes of their release from the gut. Blocking it raises incretin levels after meals, which increases insulin secretion and suppresses glucagon — but only when glucose is elevated, since the incretin effect is glucose-dependent. That is why DPP-4 inhibitors rarely cause hypoglycaemia on their own.

It is used for type 2 diabetes, alone or with metformin, a sulfonylurea, a thiazolidinedione or insulin, and it is available as fixed-dose combinations with metformin. It is weight-neutral and generally very well tolerated, which makes it a common choice in older patients and where hypoglycaemia must be avoided. Liver enzyme elevations have been reported, so liver function is checked before starting and periodically, and it is avoided in hepatic impairment — a monitoring requirement that distinguishes it from sitagliptin. It is dosed twice daily at the higher dose.
