Product Description:
Thiothixene, also known as tiotixene, is a typical (first-generation) antipsychotic medication belonging to the thioxanthene class. It is marketed under the brand name Navane and is primarily used in the management of schizophrenia. Thiothixene works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, which helps regulate abnormal thought processes, reduce hallucinations, and control delusional behavior.
In addition to its primary indication, thiothixene may exhibit effects commonly associated with neuroleptic drugs, including anxiolytic, anti-aggressive, and mood-stabilizing properties. It has also been used in the treatment of other psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder, manic episodes, and behavioral disturbances, where regulation of thought and behavior is required.
The side-effect profile of thiothixene is similar to other typical antipsychotics. Common adverse effects include weight gain, restlessness, mental distress, and difficulty remaining still. Anticholinergic effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and insomnia may also occur. Less frequently, thiothixene may cause extrapyramidal symptoms, including drug-induced Parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia, particularly with long-term use. Careful medical supervision is recommended during treatment.
