This capsule combines quercetin 500 mg with bromelain 100 mg. Quercetin is a flavonol, one of the commonest plant flavonoids, found in onions, apples, capers and tea; commercial material is often extracted from the dried buds of Sophora japonica and supplied as the dihydrate. Bromelain is a mixture of protein-digesting cysteine proteases from the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant, Ananas comosus. A capsule is the simple way to deliver this poorly soluble dry blend.

With an enzyme in the blend, milligrams alone say little. Bromelain strength is normally stated as activity, in gelatin digesting units (GDU) or FIP units, so ask for activity per gram and per capsule. Activity falls with heat and moisture. For quercetin, check the HPLC assay, whether it refers to anhydrous or dihydrate material, and limits for heavy metals and residual solvents. People allergic to pineapple may react to bromelain, and labels commonly advise care with anticoagulants and before surgery. The blend is a food supplement in most markets, though a bromelain concentrate is authorised as a medicinal product in some.
