Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic amine acting principally on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa, producing vasoconstriction and relief of congestion. Unlike topical decongestants it is taken orally, so it does not cause rebound congestion, which makes it suitable for the longer courses that allergic rhinitis and sinusitis require. It is supplied as tablets and capsules at 30, 60 and 120 mg, as extended-release presentations, and as syrup.

The controlling issue in sourcing this product is not pharmacology but precursor control. Pseudoephedrine is a precursor in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine, and is consequently subject to controls in most jurisdictions under national legislation implementing the 1988 UN Convention. Those controls vary widely and materially: some markets require import and export authorisations for the substance and for finished products containing it; several have moved pseudoephedrine behind the pharmacy counter with purchase quantity limits and identification requirements; a few have restricted or withdrawn it entirely in favour of phenylephrine.

Sourcing notes. Establish the destination market's control status before quoting, not after an order is placed. Where authorisations are required, obtain them before shipment — consignments detained at customs for want of a precursor permit are difficult and slow to release, and the reputational consequence for the importer is disproportionate.
