Product Description:

Nifedipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It relaxes the smooth muscle of arteries and eases the resistance the heart pumps against, with little direct effect on heart rate. Immediate-release nifedipine acts within minutes and fades in hours, which can drop blood pressure sharply and raise heart rate. Extended-release tablets, often osmotic or matrix systems, give steady levels over 24 hours from one daily dose.

Extended-release nifedipine is used for hypertension and chronic stable angina, and many guidelines use it for high blood pressure in pregnancy. Short-acting forms are no longer advised for long-term control because of rapid swings in pressure. Extended-release tablets are swallowed whole, and an empty shell may appear in the stool. Ankle swelling, flushing and headache are common. CYP3A4 handles nifedipine, so grapefruit juice and inducers such as rifampicin alter levels. It is not used in cardiogenic shock.
