Product Description:
Meclizine Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of meclizine, a synthetic piperazine derivative with antiemetic, sedative, and histamine H1 receptor–blocking properties. It functions primarily as an antihistamine by inhibiting the action of histamine at H1 receptors, thereby preventing symptoms associated with histamine release such as vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, bronchoconstriction, and spasmodic contraction of gastrointestinal smooth muscle. Through these actions, meclizine helps reduce nausea, vomiting, and dizziness related to vestibular disturbances.
In addition to its antihistaminic activity, Meclizine Hydrochloride exhibits anticholinergic effects and may act directly on the medullary chemoreceptor trigger zone, contributing to its antiemetic efficacy. This combined mechanism makes it particularly effective in the prevention and treatment of motion sickness and vertigo. Meclizine is commonly prescribed for balance disorders such as Ménière’s disease and other conditions affecting the inner ear.
Meclizine, marketed under brand names such as Bonine, is administered orally and is well known for its relatively long duration of action. Therapeutic effects generally begin within one hour of administration and may last for up to 24 hours. Compared with other first-generation antihistamines, meclizine produces less sedation, making it suitable for both preventive and symptomatic management of motion-related nausea and dizziness.
