Product Description:
Kojic acid is a natural compound made by fermenting fungi such as Aspergillus oryzae. It chelates copper at the active site of tyrosinase, the enzyme that starts melanin production, and so slows new pigment formation in the skin. Creams on this page range from 1% to 4%. Kojic acid oxidises in air and light, turning yellow to brown, so formulators add antioxidants or use the more stable ester, kojic dipalmitate.
Kojic acid creams are used to even out skin tone in hyperpigmentation such as dark spots, sun spots and melasma. Most markets sell them as cosmetics, though some regulators class higher strengths or combinations as medicines. A European scientific committee judged kojic acid safe in face and hand products at up to 1%, so higher strengths may not comply as EU cosmetics. It can irritate skin and cause contact allergy, so users should patch test, avoid broken skin and wear daily sunscreen. Users should stop if redness or itching develops.
Sourcing notes. First confirm the regulatory category in your market, because a cosmetic notification and a medicine registration need quite different files. For cosmetics, ask for the full INCI list, a product information file and safety assessment, preservative challenge test results, and manufacture under ISO 22716 cosmetics GMP. The CoA per batch should state kojic acid content, pH, viscosity, microbial limits and heavy metals. Opaque airless pumps or laminate tubes protect the active better than jars. Ask for stability data in your climatic zone, including IVb, with colour change limits over shelf life.
