Product Description:

Coal tar is a by-product of distilling bituminous coal, a dark mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols and other compounds. On skin it slows overactive epidermal cell turnover, reduces scaling and eases itching, though its mechanism is not fully understood. This page covers solutions and shampoos at 0.5%, 1%, 2% or 5%. Shampoos suit the scalp; solutions go into bath water or onto plaques. Labels may express strength as crude coal tar or as coal tar solution, a weaker alcoholic extract, so check which.

It is used for chronic plaque psoriasis, especially of the scalp, seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff, often with other topical treatments. Frequency follows the product label, and shampoos usually stay on for a few minutes before rinsing. It is kept out of the eyes, off broken or inflamed skin and away from pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis. Tar raises sensitivity to sunlight. It smells strongly and can stain skin, clothing and light or bleached hair. Folliculitis and irritation are the usual side effects.

Sourcing notes. Status varies by market. In the US, coal tar at 0.5% to 5% falls under the over-the-counter monograph for dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and psoriasis, while the EU bars it from cosmetics, so tar shampoos there are licensed medicines. Ask which category applies, and for a CTD or ACTD dossier where a licence is needed. Request a CoA stating tar content against label, plus GMP and CoPP for medicines. Store alcohol-based solutions away from flames, and specify strength basis, bottle size and language.
