Isoxsuprine is a vasodilator and uterine relaxant. It is used in the treatment of premature labor (when the uterus starts contracting for birth too early than usual). It is also helpful in the treatment of peripheral vascular diseases.

Product Description:

Isoxsuprine is a beta-adrenergic agonist with direct vasodilator action on vascular smooth muscle. By relaxing arterial walls it increases blood flow to the limbs, which is the basis of its use in peripheral vascular disorders such as Raynaud's phenomenon, intermittent claudication and cerebral vascular insufficiency. Beta-2 stimulation also relaxes uterine muscle, which led to its historical use to delay preterm labour.

That obstetric use no longer stands up. Regulators withdrew approval in the US for lack of demonstrated effectiveness, and modern practice uses other tocolytics under specialist supervision, so isoxsuprine should not be relied on for preterm labour. Evidence in peripheral vascular disease is also weak by modern standards. Adverse effects follow from beta stimulation: flushing, palpitations, tachycardia, dizziness and hypotension. It is avoided immediately after childbirth and in arterial bleeding.

Sourcing notes. Registration varies widely. It was withdrawn in the US and much of Western Europe, while remaining available in India and several other markets, sometimes over the counter. Any buyer should confirm both registration and the approved indication locally, because the indication for which it is registered differs by country and obstetric use is contentious.
