Product Description:

Iron isomaltoside, also called ferric derisomaltose, is an intravenous iron preparation in which iron is held inside a carbohydrate shell of tightly bound isomaltoside. The design solves a specific problem: free iron in the bloodstream is toxic, so the carrier must release it slowly to the transferrin and ferritin that handle it safely. Because this carbohydrate binds the iron firmly, a large dose can be given in a single infusion rather than across repeated visits.

It is used for iron deficiency anaemia where oral iron has failed, is not tolerated, or cannot work — notably in chronic kidney disease and dialysis, inflammatory bowel disease, heavy uterine bleeding and the perioperative period. The whole replacement requirement can often be given in one sitting. Hypersensitivity reactions are the principal risk and the reason it must be given where resuscitation facilities exist, with the patient observed afterwards. Transient hypophosphataemia occurs and can be clinically significant.
