Product Description:

Ferric maltol is an oral iron preparation in which ferric iron is complexed with three molecules of maltol, a naturally occurring flavour compound. Conventional oral iron uses ferrous salts, which dissolve freely in the gut and leave unabsorbed iron in the lumen — the cause of the constipation, nausea and black stool that drive discontinuation. The maltol complex is designed to remain intact until absorption, delivering iron with less free iron left behind.

It is indicated for iron deficiency anaemia in adults, and its distinct position is in inflammatory bowel disease, where ferrous salts are poorly tolerated and free luminal iron is an active concern, but intravenous iron means an infusion visit. It offers an oral option for patients who have already failed ferrous sulphate.

Sourcing notes. Originator product, on patent, no generic. Worth noting for buyers that the comparator in trials was placebo or intravenous iron rather than optimally dosed ferrous sulphate, so the tolerability advantage is real but its size against alternate-day low-dose ferrous dosing is not established.
