Eltrombopag is a small-molecule thrombopoietin receptor agonist. It binds the receptor on bone marrow megakaryocytes, at a site different from natural thrombopoietin, and drives them to make more platelets. The 12.5 mg and 25 mg product is a powder for oral suspension in single-dose sachets, mixed with water just before use. This form exists for young children and others who cannot swallow tablets, and it allows doses below the smallest tablet strength.

It is used for persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia in adults and children from one year when other treatments have not worked well enough.
