Product Description:

Cysteamine is an aminothiol that treats cystinosis, an inherited disease in which the transporter that moves cystine out of lysosomes is defective. Cystine accumulates and crystallises, destroying the kidneys and, over time, the eyes, thyroid, muscle and brain. Cysteamine enters the lysosome and reacts with cystine to form a mixed disulfide that can leave through a different transporter, bypassing the defect and depleting the store.

It is used for nephropathic cystinosis from diagnosis onward, and started early it delays kidney failure by years. Treatment is lifelong and demanding: the immediate-release capsules are taken every six hours, day and night, while a delayed-release form allows twice-daily dosing. The characteristic problem is smell — cysteamine metabolites produce a sulphurous breath and body odour that affects adherence, particularly in adolescents. Nausea and vomiting are common. White cell cystine levels are measured to guide dosing. Eye drops are needed separately, because oral treatment does not reach corneal crystals.
