Product Description:

A collagen wound matrix is a dressing made largely of collagen, usually purified from bovine, porcine or avian tissue, sometimes combined with oxidised regenerated cellulose or alginate. In the wound it acts as a scaffold for cells and is gradually broken down. Products that include oxidised regenerated cellulose are designed to bind protease enzymes, which are often raised in long-standing wounds. This listing covers sheets of 5×5, 10×10 and 15×15 cm; gels and powders are separate presentations with different handling.

Wound care nurses use collagen matrices on clean, granulating chronic wounds that have stalled, such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers and pressure ulcers, and on some partial-thickness wounds. The wound is cleansed and debrided first, the matrix is cut to size, sometimes moistened with saline, and held in place with a secondary dressing chosen for the amount of exudate. It is not used on dry eschar, on untreated infected wounds, or in patients sensitive to collagen or its animal source.

These dressings are registered as medical devices, and in the European Union devices made from animal tissue derivatives fall into the highest risk class, so check the category in your market. Ask for the ISO 13485 certificate, declaration of conformity, sterilisation method, shelf life and storage conditions. Because the material is of animal origin, request the species, country of animal origin and TSE/BSE documentation; some hospitals and patients need to know whether the collagen is bovine or porcine.
