Product Description:

Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that kills a wide range of bacteria on the skin. The 7.1% chlorhexidine digluconate gel (equal to 4% chlorhexidine) is made specifically for umbilical cord care: applied to the cord stump after birth, it prevents the cord infections that can spread and kill newborns in settings with high infection rates.

WHO recommends daily application to the cord stump during the first week of life for babies born at home in areas with high newborn mortality. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for this use. It is only for the cord and skin around it, and must be kept away from the eyes and ears.

Sourcing notes. Several manufacturers in Africa and Asia produce the gel, which is bought by health ministries, UNICEF and NGO newborn programmes. Gel is preferred over liquid because it is easier to apply and less likely to be misused. Store below 30 °C.
