Clemastine is a first-generation antihistamine widely used for the relief of allergic conditions. It works by blocking histamine H1-receptors, reducing symptoms such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, runny nose, hives, and other allergic skin reactions. It is effective in seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, urticaria, insect bites, and mild dermatological allergies.

Clemastine is a first-generation ethanolamine (benzhydryl ether) antihistamine with a notably long duration of action, typically around twelve hours, which distinguishes it from shorter-acting agents in the same class and supports twice-daily dosing. Like other ethanolamines it is meaningfully sedating and carries anticholinergic effects, and it retains a place in practice where those properties are acceptable or actively useful.

It is supplied as tablets, syrup and injection. Clemastine fumarate is the salt in general commercial use, and strengths are quoted inconsistently across markets — some as the fumarate salt, others as the clemastine base — which is a recurring source of confusion in tender documents and purchase specifications. A 1 mg base strength corresponds to approximately 1.34 mg of the fumarate.

Sourcing notes. That salt-versus-base ambiguity is worth resolving explicitly in writing before an order is placed; specify which basis the strength refers to on the purchase order, not only in the enquiry. The injectable presentation is manufactured by considerably fewer sites than the oral forms and requires a sterile facility approval covering small-volume parenterals, so confirm the specific plant holds that scope rather than relying on a company-level GMP claim.
