Cemiplimab-rwlc is a monoclonal antibody (PD-1 inhibitor) used to treat various cancers, including metastatic or locally advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and certain types of non-small cell lung cancer. It works by boosting the immune system’s ability to detect and destroy cancer cells.

Product Description:

Cemiplimab is a monoclonal antibody that blocks PD-1, a receptor on T cells that tumours exploit to switch off the immune response against them. Blocking the interaction between PD-1 and its ligands releases that brake, allowing T cells to recognise and attack tumour cells. It is one of several antibodies in this class, and the differences between them are modest.

It is used for advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma — tumours which are common, often in elderly patients, and which had no good systemic option before checkpoint inhibitors — and for non-small cell lung cancer with high PD-L1 expression and for cervical cancer. Its adverse effects are immune-mediated rather than cytotoxic: colitis, pneumonitis, hepatitis, endocrinopathies including permanent thyroid and adrenal failure, and skin reactions, any of which can occur months into treatment and require corticosteroid treatment rather than dose reduction.
