Product Description:
Amiodarone hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of an iodine-rich benzofuran derivative with potent antiarrhythmic and vasodilatory properties. It is classified as a class III antiarrhythmic agent and exerts its therapeutic effect by blocking multiple ion channels in cardiac tissue, including potassium, sodium, and calcium channels. This action leads to prolongation of the cardiac action potential and refractory period, helping to stabilize abnormal heart rhythms. In addition, amiodarone inhibits both alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors, which reduces sympathetic stimulation of the heart, produces a negative chronotropic effect, and lowers myocardial oxygen demand. The drug may also promote vasodilation through stimulation of nitric oxide release and cyclooxygenase-dependent endothelial relaxing factors.
Clinically, amiodarone is widely used in the treatment and prevention of various serious cardiac arrhythmias. These include ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrial fibrillation, wide complex tachycardia, and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. It can be administered orally, intravenously, or intraosseously, depending on the clinical situation. When taken orally, the onset of therapeutic effect may take several weeks due to its complex pharmacokinetics. Amiodarone is typically prescribed under close medical supervision, especially in patients with severe or life-threatening cardiac conditions.
