Product Description:
Acitretin is a second-generation oral retinoid and the only FDA-approved systemic retinoid for the treatment of severe, resistant psoriasis. It belongs to the retinoid class, which includes natural and synthetic compounds related to vitamin A, influencing cellular growth, differentiation, and proliferation. Acitretin works by binding to nuclear receptors, regulating gene transcription, inducing keratinocyte differentiation, and reducing epidermal hyperplasia. This slows down abnormal skin cell reproduction, improving skin texture and reducing the scaling, thickening, and inflammation associated with severe psoriasis. It is typically prescribed for patients who have not responded to other therapies due to potential side effects, including teratogenicity and mucocutaneous reactions. Acitretin is readily absorbed and widely distributed after oral administration, with a therapeutic effect generally observed after two to four weeks of treatment. Beyond its approved use in psoriasis, acitretin may also be applied off-label in dermatology for other keratinization disorders. Sold under brand names such as Neotigason® and Soriatane®, acitretin should be used under strict medical supervision, enabling healthcare teams to manage dosing, monitor adverse effects, and ensure safe and effective therapy for patients with severe skin disorders.
