Product Description:

This tablet pairs valsartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker, with hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. Valsartan blocks the AT1 receptor, so angiotensin II can no longer narrow blood vessels or drive aldosterone release, while hydrochlorothiazide makes the kidney excrete more sodium and water. The effects add together, and the ARB partly offsets thiazide potassium loss. It is indicated for essential hypertension in adults not adequately controlled on valsartan or hydrochlorothiazide alone, so it is rarely the first drug started. The dose is one tablet once daily, with or without food. It is not used in pregnancy, as drugs acting on the renin-angiotensin system can harm the fetus, and is contraindicated in anuria and severe hepatic or renal impairment. Pharmacists check potassium, sodium and renal function and watch for lithium, NSAIDs and aliskiren. Thiazide labels also warn about non-melanoma skin cancer with long-term use.
