Product Description:

Senna extract comes from the leaves or pods of Senna alexandrina. Its sennosides are anthraquinone glycosides that pass unchanged to the colon, where gut bacteria convert them to rhein anthrone, which stimulates colonic movement and draws water into the bowel. Senna is a stimulant laxative that usually works in 6 to 12 hours. Each capsule is standardised to 8.6 mg sennosides, the usual content per unit. Capsules give a standardised dose without the taste of tea or syrup.

It is used for short-term relief of occasional constipation and, under medical direction, in bowel preparation. Adults typically take one or two units at bedtime. Prolonged use without advice is discouraged, since it can cause loss of fluid and potassium. It must not be used in intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease or unexplained abdominal pain, and age limits apply to children. Low potassium increases the hazard with digoxin. Legal status varies: an OTC or traditional herbal medicine in many markets, a food supplement in others.
