Product Description:
Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is a short-acting intravenous anaesthetic used to induce and maintain general anaesthesia and for sedation in intensive care and during procedures. Because propofol does not dissolve in water, it is given as a white oil-in-water emulsion of 10 mg/mL (1%) or 20 mg/mL (2%), in ampoules, vials and pre-filled syringes. Well-known brands include Diprivan, Propofol-Lipuro and Propoven.
Sourcing propofol injection
- Emulsion type. Long-chain triglyceride (LCT) emulsions use soybean oil; MCT/LCT emulsions mix medium- and long-chain oils. Match what your registration specifies.
- Additives. Some products contain disodium edetate or another agent to slow microbial growth, others none; this affects how long an opened vial or infusion may be used.
- Emulsion quality. Ask for the globule size results (USP <729>) on the Certificate of Analysis, because large fat globules are a safety issue.
- Storage. At or below 25 °C as labelled, with some labels also setting a minimum of 2 to 4 °C. Do not freeze; freezing breaks the emulsion.

Propofol API is a liquid at room temperature and oxidises when exposed to air and light, so it is normally packed under nitrogen in sealed containers. Ask for a Certificate of Analysis to the Ph.
