Product Description:

Nystatin is a polyene antifungal that binds ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, makes it leaky and kills Candida yeasts. It is barely absorbed from mucosa, so it acts where it is placed and has few systemic effects. The vaginal tablet takes the drug straight to the site of thrush, which suits pregnancy and women who should avoid oral azoles. The standard vaginal strength is 100,000 IU.

The usual course is one or two tablets inserted high into the vagina each night for 14 days, continued through menstruation. Azole pessaries give shorter courses, so nystatin is often kept as a second option for non-albicans Candida, for azole intolerance, or by preference in pregnancy. Local burning or irritation is the main side effect. Recurrent episodes call for a swab and culture rather than repeated courses.
