Product Description:

Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial. It inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes bacteria need to copy and separate their DNA. Blood levels after an oral dose are modest, but the drug concentrates in urine, so its place has always been the urinary tract rather than systemic infection. This page lists tablets of 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg; 400 mg is the usual adult strength. The original reference product is no longer marketed in the US.

Norfloxacin is used mainly for urinary tract infections and, in some markets, for prostatitis and infective diarrhoea. Rising resistance in E. coli means local susceptibility data should guide use, and it is no longer suitable for gonorrhoea. European regulators have restricted fluoroquinolones to cases where other antibiotics are unsuitable, because of rare but disabling, long-lasting effects on tendons, muscles, joints and nerves. Tablets are taken one hour before or two hours after meals or milk. Antacids, iron, zinc and calcium must be spaced apart.
