Product Description:

Interferon beta-1b is a recombinant form of human interferon beta made in E. coli. It is not glycosylated and has a serine in place of cysteine at position 17, which sets it apart from interferon beta-1a. In multiple sclerosis it dampens immune activity by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and limiting the entry of immune cells into the central nervous system. The 250 microgram dose comes as a freeze-dried powder with a prefilled diluent syringe, reconstituted to 1 mL for subcutaneous injection every other day.

It is used in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, in secondary progressive disease with continuing relapses, and after a first demyelinating event suggestive of the disease. Treatment usually starts at a quarter dose and is increased over a few weeks to improve tolerance. Flu-like symptoms after injection are common and ease with time and simple analgesics. Injection-site reactions, including occasional necrosis, call for site rotation and good technique. Liver tests and blood counts are checked regularly, and depression, thrombotic microangiopathy and nephrotic syndrome are labelled risks.

Sourcing notes. The reference product is stored at room temperature, not above 25°C and not frozen, so it can travel without a refrigerated cold chain, though temperature should still be logged. Titration packs exist for the first weeks, so state whether you need starter or standard packs. Ask for the batch CoA, batch release certificate, GMP certificate and CoPP. Some regulators require national lot release for biologics. It is prescription-only, used by neurologists. For tenders, say whether autoinjectors or patient training material are expected.
