Hyoscine butylbromide is an antimuscarinic antispasmodic. It blocks acetylcholine in the smooth muscle of the gut and urinary tract, so the muscle relaxes and cramping eases. This page covers 10 mg coated tablets. As a quaternary ammonium compound it is poorly absorbed and hardly crosses the blood-brain barrier, so drowsiness is uncommon. Do not confuse it with hyoscine hydrobromide, a different salt used for travel sickness.
The tablets give short-term relief of abdominal cramps from gut spasm, including irritable bowel syndrome cramping, and some genitourinary spasm. Adults typically take 10 to 20 mg up to four times a day, swallowed whole. Contraindications include untreated angle-closure glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, mechanical bowel obstruction, megacolon and urinary retention. Effects add to those of tricyclic antidepressants, some antihistamines and other antimuscarinics. Labels advise medical review if pain is new, severe or persistent.
