Product Description:

Furosemide is a loop diuretic. It blocks the sodium-potassium-chloride co-transporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, causing a strong, fast loss of salt and water. This page covers the 10 mg/mL injection in ampoules, typically 2 mL to 10 mL. Given intravenously, it acts within minutes. That speed is the reason for the IV form: it serves acute care, and patients whose gut absorbs poorly because of oedema.

The injection is used for acute pulmonary oedema, fluid overload in heart failure, oedema from kidney or liver disease, and when oral furosemide is not possible. It is given by slow IV injection, and labels limit the rate, often to about 4 mg per minute, because rapid high doses can damage hearing. Larger doses go by infusion. Teams monitor potassium, sodium, fluid balance and renal function. Ototoxicity rises with aminoglycosides, and lithium levels rise. The alkaline solution can precipitate with acidic fluids. Discoloured solution is discarded.
