Product Description:
Flurazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative marketed under brand names such as Dalmane and Dalmadorm and is primarily used for the short-term management of insomnia. It possesses anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties, making it effective in improving sleep onset and maintenance in patients with sleep disturbances. One of the distinguishing features of flurazepam is the formation of an active metabolite with a long half-life, which can remain in the bloodstream for several days and contributes to its prolonged therapeutic effect.
Developed by Roche Pharmaceuticals, flurazepam was patented in 1968 and introduced into medical practice the same year. It was among the first benzodiazepine hypnotic agents to be commercially available and played a significant role in the early pharmacological treatment of insomnia. Clinically, flurazepam is indicated for mild to moderate insomnia, including difficulty falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, early morning awakenings, or a combination of these symptoms.
Due to its long-acting nature, flurazepam is sometimes preferred for patients who have difficulty maintaining sleep. However, careful dosing and short-term use are recommended, as residual sedation may occur. Alternative benzodiazepines with intermediate half-lives may also be considered depending on individual patient needs.
