Product Description:

Bicalutamide is a non-steroidal antiandrogen that competitively blocks the androgen receptor in prostate tissue. Unlike the second-generation agents it does not suppress testosterone production, so circulating levels rise while the receptor stays blocked — which preserves some of the physical effects of testosterone but also means it is generally used alongside, not instead of, androgen deprivation.

It is used with a GnRH analogue or surgical castration for advanced prostate cancer, to prevent the testosterone flare that occurs when a GnRH agonist is started, and at higher dose as monotherapy in some markets for locally advanced disease where preserving sexual function and bone density matters to the patient. Gynaecomastia and breast tenderness are very common at monotherapy doses and are often managed with prophylactic breast irradiation or tamoxifen. Hepatotoxicity requires liver function monitoring, particularly in the first months.
