Benralizumab is a monoclonal antibody used for the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma. It works by targeting and binding to the interleukin-5 receptor alpha (IL-5Rα) on eosinophils, leading to their rapid depletion. This helps reduce inflammation in the airways and improves breathing. Benralizumab is administered via subcutaneous injection once every four to eight weeks.

Benralizumab is a humanised monoclonal antibody directed against the interleukin-5 receptor alpha subunit on eosinophils. Unlike agents that neutralise circulating IL-5, benralizumab binds the receptor itself and, through antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity, produces near-complete depletion of eosinophils rather than merely reducing their activation. It is indicated as add-on maintenance treatment in severe eosinophilic asthma, and is dosed subcutaneously at 30 mg — every four weeks for the first three doses, then every eight weeks.

That eight-weekly maintenance interval is a genuine differentiator against other biologics in the class, which generally require dosing every two or four weeks.

Sourcing notes, and these are decisive. Benralizumab is a biologic under patent protection with no approved biosimilar. It cannot be sourced generically, and any offer of a generic benralizumab should be treated as a serious warning sign rather than an opportunity.
