Product Description:

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant and purine antimetabolite. In the body it is converted to 6-mercaptopurine and then to thioguanine nucleotides, which disrupt DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing lymphocytes. Azathioprine is used to prevent rejection after kidney and other organ transplants and in autoimmune conditions such as severe rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis and inflammatory bowel disease. The reconstituted solution is strongly alkaline and irritant, so it is given slowly by intravenous injection or diluted infusion, with care to avoid extravasation. Blood counts and liver tests are monitored and live vaccines avoided.
