Product Description:
Acetazolamide Sodium, sold under the brand name Diamox® and other regional brands, is a first-generation carbonic anhydrase inhibitor with diuretic and anticonvulsant properties. It is the sodium salt of acetazolamide, a nonbacteriostatic sulfonamide derivative, and is used to treat a variety of conditions including glaucoma, epilepsy, acute mountain sickness, periodic paralysis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, heart failure, and to alkalinize urine. By inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, acetazolamide reduces the availability of hydrogen ions in the renal tubules, leading to increased excretion of bicarbonate, sodium, and water, thereby promoting diuresis. In the eye, decreased bicarbonate levels help reduce intraocular pressure through osmotic mechanisms, making it effective for both long-term management of open-angle glaucoma and short-term use in acute angle-closure glaucoma until surgery can be performed. Its anticonvulsant effects are partly attributed to carbonic anhydrase inhibition in the central nervous system, which helps modulate carbon dioxide tension and improve oxygenation. Acetazolamide Sodium is administered orally or intravenously, offering a versatile treatment option for managing fluid retention, elevated intraocular pressure, and related systemic conditions under medical supervision.
