Product Description:

Acyclovir (aciclovir) is a nucleoside analogue that is activated by viral thymidine kinase inside infected cells and then blocks herpes virus DNA polymerase. Given intravenously, it reaches high levels in the blood and in the brain, which is why it is the standard first treatment for herpes simplex encephalitis.

The injection is used for herpes simplex encephalitis, neonatal herpes, severe primary genital herpes, and herpes simplex or varicella-zoster (chickenpox, shingles) infections in immunocompromised patients. It is infused slowly, usually every eight hours, with the dose based on weight and adjusted for kidney function. Patients are kept well hydrated, because the drug can crystallise in the kidneys.
