Product Description:

Peripheral IV cannulas and gravity infusion sets form the basic route into a vein for fluids and drugs. A cannula is a short, flexible plastic catheter placed over a steel needle, which is withdrawn once the catheter sits in the vein. Designs vary: ported or non-ported, winged or straight, with or without a mechanism that covers the needle tip, and in polyurethane or FEP. Gauge is colour coded, and the infusion set links bag or bottle to the cannula through a spike, drip chamber, roller clamp and Luer connector.

Staff choose the smallest gauge that will do the job and keep large bores for rapid fluid or blood replacement. Standard adult sets give a fixed number of drops per millilitre for gravity rate counting, while paediatric burette or microdrip sets allow finer control; sets for pumps must match the pump model. Cannula sites need daily inspection for phlebitis, and local policy sets how long a cannula and set may stay in place. Blood needs its own filtered set, and light-sensitive drugs need opaque tubing.

Ask for the ISO 13485 certificate, device registration or CE certificate, sterilisation method and validation, and shelf life. Where rules call for sharps-injury protection, as EU rules do for healthcare workers, buy safety-engineered cannulas. Check whether tubing contains DEHP and whether the spike suits your containers.
