Product Description:
Citicoline, the generic name for cytidine-5′-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline), is a naturally occurring compound and a key precursor of phospholipid phosphatidylcholine, an essential component of neuronal cell membranes. After oral or injectable administration, citicoline is rapidly metabolized into cytidine and choline, which cross the blood-brain barrier and are used by brain cells to resynthesize CDP-choline. This process supports membrane repair, neurotransmitter synthesis—particularly acetylcholine—and overall neuronal function.
Preclinical studies have demonstrated citicoline’s neuroprotective effects in models of brain ischemia and trauma, suggesting its potential to reduce neuronal damage and support recovery. While large clinical trials in acute conditions such as ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury have not consistently shown significant benefits, citicoline appears to be useful in slowly progressive neurodegenerative conditions, including mild vascular cognitive impairment and glaucoma.
The exact mechanisms of citicoline’s pharmacological activity remain under investigation. Emerging evidence suggests that, despite rapid metabolism, the intact molecule or intermediate hydrolysis products like cytidine monophosphate and phosphocholine may have pharmacological activity, contributing to neuroprotection and cognitive support. Overall, citicoline serves as a valuable agent in supporting brain health, promoting neuronal repair, and aiding cognitive function in specific neurological conditions.
