Product Description:

Hydrogel dressings are water-rich wound dressings made from hydrophilic polymers. The product here is an amorphous gel of modified carboxymethylcellulose with propylene glycol and water, supplied in a tube or applicator for spreading into the wound bed. Sheet hydrogels, with the gel held on a film or mesh, are a related format. A hydrogel donates moisture rather than absorbing much, which sets it apart from foam and alginate dressings. Packs are described by gel fill weight, not by a drug strength.

The intended purpose comes from the labelling. For amorphous hydrogels it is usually to keep the wound moist and rehydrate dry slough or necrotic tissue so the body's own enzymes can loosen it, known as autolytic debridement. The gel is applied in a layer, covered with a secondary dressing and changed as directed. It is not meant for heavily exuding wounds, where extra moisture can macerate skin. Clinicians ask about sensitivity to propylene glycol.

Sourcing notes. Hydrogel dressings are medical devices, and those for chronic or deep wounds generally sit in a higher risk class under the EU MDR than simple dressings. Ask for the CE certificate, UKCA marking or the device registration your market requires, the ISO 13485 certificate and the declaration of conformity. Request biocompatibility data to ISO 10993 and, for sterile tubes, the sterilisation validation, such as ISO 11137 for radiation. Gels are normally sterile and single-patient use; store as labelled, with no cold chain. Specify gel or sheet, fill weight or size, added ingredients and units per box.
